The famous Temple of Chitai Almora is the Golu Devta Chitai temple, dedicated to Gollu or Goljyu Devta an Avtar of Lord Shiva in the form of Gaur Bhairav. Although there are many temples of Golu Devta in Almora but the Chitai Golu Devta Temple is the most sacred one. It is reputed to make every wish come true, provided the worshipper ask for it with a clear conscience. The temple is situated at 9kms from Almora.

Chitai Golu Devta- God of Justice
Golu Devta is famously regarded as God of Justice. Maximum devotees worship the deity and ask for the justice on behalf of the injustice have been done to them or with their family. Devotees worship at Golu Devta with the means of White cloth, Pagri and White Shawl. People believes that God asks for in propitiation is a bell, as is evident from the thousands of bells strung across the temple premises. Anyone can even seek Gollu Devtas divine intervention by writing to him. Stacks of letter are pinned all over the temple along with bells.

As the story goes, once a king went Ito the forest for hunting, when the king became thirsty he ordered one of his servants to fetch water for him, in turn the servant disturbed a lady deep in meditation, the king got fond of the lady and married her. As the other queens of the king became jealous of the new queen they stole the newborn child of the queen and replaced it with a stone and threw the kid in a lake where a fisherman found him. Later when the boy realised about his true identity he decided to seek on the injustice done to his mother. He goes to the lake with a wooden horse and tries to make the horse drink water from the lake, seeing this the king asked the boy how can he make the wooden horse drink water at which the kid asked the king if a women can give birth to a stone then the horse can also drink water. The king realised his mistake and accepted him as his son. He then treated this sub jects with mare care and concern and became popular for his justice and was regarded as Gwalla devta.
there are also many other stories relating to the origin of Golu devta, some says he was the son of the Katyuri king, Jhall Rai and the grandson of Hal rai. According to another story he was the general in the army of Chand king Baz Bahadur.
Gwala Devta also called as “Gwala” which means a herder of Cows. There is also well known saying about Golu Devta, that if you tie up a bell in neck of sacred cow, the ringing equals to 1000 bells in a holy temple. it was his belief that all 33 crores gods and Goddesses are pressent in a single temple Golu devta have siblings Kalva Devta, in form of Bhairava and Garh Devi in the form of Shakti. In villages of Chamoli which are very close to Kumaon, Golu Devta is also worshiped as key deity (Ishta/ Kull Devta)
Golu Devta is worshipped by devotees from far flung areas. Devotees perform 3 days pooja or 9 days pooja and give offerings in name of Lord Golu Devta Also known as Goreel Devta famous in Chamoli district (Jaagar) Lord Golu basically worshipped by offering Ghee, Milk. Curd. Halwa, Poori. Pakaurı.

Golu Devta Chitai Temple is located at 9 km from Almora on Jageshwar Dham Road. It is well connected with road and one can reach easily by sharing taxi, buses etc. Nearest rail connectivity is at Kathgodam railway station (94 kms). Pantnagar Airport (124 kms) and IGI International Airport (352 kms) are nearest airports to reach Almora.

ऋग्वेद में उत्तराखंड को देवभूमि कहा गया है। ऐसी भूमि जहां देवी-देवता निवास करते हैं। हिमालय की गोद में बसे इस सबसे पावन क्षेत्र को मनीषियों की पूर्ण कर्म भूमि कहा जाता है। उत्तराखंड में देवी-देवताओं के कई चमत्कारिक मंदिर हैं। इन मंदिरों की प्रसिद्धि भारत ही नहीं बल्कि विदेशों तक फैली हुई है। इन्हीं में से एक मंदिर गोलू देवता का भी है। गोलू देवता को स्थानीय मान्यताओं में न्याय का देवता कहा जाता है।
गोलू देवता अपने न्याय के लिए दूर-दूर तक मशहूर हैं। हालांकि, उत्तराखंड में गोलू देवता के कई मंदिर हैं, लेकिन इनमें से सबसे लोकप्रिय और आस्था का केंद्र अल्मोड़ा जिले में स्थिति चितई गोलू देवता का मंदिर है। इस मंदिर परिसर में भक्तों की भीड़ और लगातार गुंजती घंटों की आवाज से ही गोलू देवता की लोक प्रियता का अंदाजा लगाया जा सकता है।
गोलू देवता को स्थानीय संस्कृति में सबसे बड़े और त्वरित न्याय के देवता के तौर पर पूजा जाता है। इन्हें राजवंशी देवता के तौर पर पुकारा जाता है। गोलू देवता को उत्तराखंड में कई नामों से पुकारा जाता है। इनमें से एक नाम गौर भैरव भी है। गोलू देवता को भगवान शिव का ही एक अवतार माना जाता है।
मनोकामना पूरी होने पर मंदिर में चढ़ाई जाती है घंटी
चितई अल्मोड़ा का प्रसिद्ध मंदिर है, गोलू देवता मंदिर, जो गोल्ज्यु देवता को समर्पित है, जिन्हें भगवान शिव के अवतार और गौर भैरव के रूप में भी जाना जाता है। अल्मोड़ा में बहुत से गोलू देवता के मंदिर हैं, लेकिन चितई गोलू देवता मंदिर सबसे पवित्र माना जाता है। कहा जाता है कि इस मंदिर में हर इच्छाएं पूर्ण होती हैं, उत्तराखंड ही नहीं बल्कि विदेशों से भी गोलू देवता के इस मंदिर में लोग न्याय मांगने के लिए आते हैं। मंदिर की घंटियों को देखकर ही आपको इस बात का अंदाजा लग जाएगा कि यहां मांगी गई किसी भी भक्त की मनोकामना कभी अधूरी नहीं रहती।
मन्नत के लिए लिखना होता है आवेदन पत्र
मंदिर में लाखों अद्भुत घंटे-घंटियों का संग्रह है। इन घंटियों को भक्त मनोकामना पूरी होने पर ही चढ़ाते हैं। चितई गोलू मंदिर में भक्त मन्नत मांगने के लिए चिट्ठी लिखते हैं। इतना ही नहीं कई लोग तो स्टांप पेपर पर लिखकर अपने लिए न्याय मांगते हैं।
चितई गोलू मंदिर अल्मोड़ा से 09 किलोमीटर दूर पिथौरागढ़ हाईवे पर है। यहां गोलू देवता का भव्य मंदिर है। मंदिर के अंदर सेफेद घोड़े में सिर पर सफेट पगड़ी बांधे गोलू देवता की प्रतिमा है, जिनके हाथों में धनुष बाण है। इस मंदिर में दूर-दूर से श्रद्धालु न्याय मांगने के लिए आते हैं। ऐसा कहा जाता है कि जिनको न्याय नहीं मिलता वो गोलू देवता की शरण में पहुंचते हैं और उसके बाद उनको न्याय मिल जाता है।
गोलू मंदिर दिल्ली से 400 किलोमीटर की दूरी पर स्थित है। अगर आप इस मंदिर के दर्शन के लिए जाना चाहते हैं तो आपको आनंद विहार से सीधे अल्मोड़ा की बस मिलेगी। इसके अलावा आप पहले दिल्ली से हल्द्वानी भी जा सकते हैं और इसके बाद यहा से अल्मोड़ा के लिए गाड़ी ले सकते हैं।
